Project Overview:

The Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability (TCAD), the Tennessee Respite Coalition (TRC), and the Area Agencies on Aging and Disability (AAADs) and the Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRC) support this proposal for the Lifespan Respite Care Program grant.  Goal: Expand, enhance, and formalize a system that will improve the statewide dissemination and coordination of respite and provide and improve access and quality of respite to families, thereby reducing caregiver strain.

Objectives for the project are to: 1) facilitate coordination among respite programs and providers and ensure an inclusive coalition for respite services; 2) increase access to respite through a “no wrong door” coordinated system; 3) develop a plan to collect and analyze data about the respite needs of families and the provision of respite services statewide; 4) enhance abilities of the TRC to respond to respite needs through a Respite Specialist; 5) increase opportunities for provider and caregiver training; and 6) increase respite volunteer training.

Outcomes and Products:

Anticipated Outcomes include:  1) increase awareness of the Lifespan Respite System statewide; 2) coordinate and expand the number of respite care providers to ensure on-going communication; 3) increase the capability of TRC to respond to the needs of caregivers, to provide on-going training, and to recruit additional providers and volunteers; 4) increase access to services; 5) partner the colleges/universities to expand the volunteer respite program model and increase respite volunteers; 6) update the current TRC computer database to provide a tracking system and data on respite referral results across age and disability, on access to respite, and track the success of referrals across the system; and 7) develop a plan for sustainability of the system through fundraising and grants.  Products: TCAD will submit key products such as “how-to” manual, reproducible materials, and a cost assessment methodology.
